Multiboxing is the term used to describe a player who is able to play multiple accounts at the same time. This is possible with one or more computers. Both Mac and PC offer solutions. There is also the possibility of using the Mac and PC simultaneously. The following pages contain more detailed information than presented here: Multiboxing hardware, Multiboxing software, Multiboxing macros, and scripts.

For some players there is no challenge enough in playing only one role at a. Some players want to recreate the feeling of old time Computer Role Playing Games where an appropriately designed team utilized to play together. There are some who don't want to rely on others to play the game when only one player is enough for someone to really try their hand at.

As mentioned in the description of the term, multiboxing is a gameplay method that is accepted by Blizzard . Multiboxing does not infringe upon Blizzard's EULA for World of Warcraft. Multiboxing in World of Warcraft requires that you meet all these criteria:

One World of Warcraft registered account for each game client you want to multibox (example: 5 characters = five accounts)[1]. This means that you'll have to buy multiple copies of the game, including all required expansions. Note: You can multibox using trial accounts. To join a party however, you need a paid leader account.

You require the power of computing to run the required number of games. This is achievable by using a single computer or a number of computers. Multibox can be accomplished using a basic computer that costs less than $700

You can broadcast your game's commands to all of your games. This can be achieved using Multiboxing software and hardware.

Additionally, you'll have to master a variety of multiboxing techniques, including Macro writing skills. You also you may have to pay particular attention to the UI in game.

 Difficulty

What kind of solution do you require? A software-only approach that uses only one machine and several copies of the game are pretty simple. Many people find the most challenging part of writing macros to permit each character in the group to function correctly. Because characters are sharing hotkeys, a lot of consideration must be given to the effects that each hotkey has. You can learn a lot about the game's Macro language, as well as other addons.

 The fundamentals

This section provides some basic information regarding multiboxing. While the hardware and software requirements are discussed, more extensive detail will be found on the following two pages : Multiboxing Hardware Requirements or Multiboxing Software Requirements

 Game software

The game must be purchased, along with the expansion depending on your preferences, for each account that you want to run concurrently. A minimum of one installation of the game's software has to be installed on each PC. A single installation directory may be used to run multiple instances of the game client. Multiple WoW directories do not needed to be installed on the same computer to run several WoW Windows. The single directory installation option saves hard drive space and makes it easier to set up and maintain of the user interface as well as extensions. Some players prefer keeping several copies of the game files on one computer. It is widely believed that having multiple versions of the game client will increase performance, but this isn't the whole truth. Multiple installations can improve performance, but only if each installation is running on an entirely different physical drive. If the method of multiple directories of installation is selected, you will need to maintain modifications to user interfaces and add-ons for each installation separately. To reduce space, Mac users can symbolic link the Data directory to install multiple copies of the same data file on one machine.

To achieve the same effect, users of Windows XP and newer can make use of Junction Links. Windows Vista/7 can use the MKLINK[3] software that comes with it to create Junction Links. Windows XP users will need to install a third-party application (e.g. Junction Link Magic).

 System hardware

It is suggested that the computer be equipped with a dual-core processor, discrete 3d accelerator and at least 1 gigabyte of memory to allow for multiple copies. Additional copies on the same system will need more powerful processors as well as more memory. If you have multiple machines, try to keep the machines identical.

 Key/mouse broadcasting software

Broadcasting keystrokes can be done in multiple ways. The mouse broadcasting method is when you activate your mouse by using a single game window. It also reflects actions on other game windows. While this is not needed for all types of multiboxing, it's beneficial to players who play Mage / Warlock / Druid classes due to the need for these classes to use area-of-effect spells.

 Additional hardware

Keyboard Video, Keyboard, and Mouse, switches (KVMs for short) are a possibility when using multiple machines. A Vetra Keyboard Multiplexer is one example for controlling multiple machines. It is possible that you will require additional monitors. However, secondary characters don't necessarily have to be on large monitors. It's possible to see their actions better on smaller monitors.

 Game concerns

You are limited to making certain choices while playing. You can pick from server types and character types to determine the races of your characters.

 PvE or PvP

 Environment versus Player

PvE is the easiest solution. Even though the ultimate aim is to play a player versus player server practice multiboxing on an PvE server will make it easier to manage. PvE is extremely forgiving. The events are scripted. They generally begin the moment you launch them, and allow for the number of attempts you'd like.

 Player versus Player

Multiboxing for Player versus Player will require a different approach than PVE. This uniqueness may result in your macros for Player and Environment might not be appropriate for PVP gameplay. This may mean you have to use more advanced macros and to put more thought into contingency planning.

 The selection of servers

You can check the server to find out what ratio it has. Are you playing on an old server or a brand-new one? Older servers tend to have established PvP systems and experienced players. It can be harder to find groups, but this is not an issue if you're five boxing, and they tend to have a more vibrant auction system and economy. In forums, asking for information about existing multiboxing guilds is an excellent method to locate a new multiboxing server. If yes, inquire in advance if you may join the guild prior to making this server your new home. If you're on US servers, one of the largest multiboxing guilds of the game is located on the Blackrock server, Horde side. [Update] The largest and active multiboxing group around the globe is currently located on Magtheridon Horde.

They are composed of three guilds because of Blizzard's limit of 1000 players per guild at the time of release of Cataclysm. They are

 Class selection

Class choice. This is contingent on your style of play and the type of server you play on. Four Mage and a Priest are required to be able to heal and deal out the damage in bursts. Other options are to replace the Mages with Warlocks, or replace the Priest with another healer class such as the Druid, Shaman, or even Paladin. A number of Shamans are a common choice. Due to macros, one set of shamans in an arena can simultaneously cast Chain Lightning, which can effectively destroy the strongest of twinks. Due to the game's mechanics, picking two classes is easier than picking three or more. It doesn't matter which five classes are better, being able to control the situation is a different issue. It all boils down to the consistency of actions between classes and the best way to have hotkeys distributed between them. When you first start multiboxing it is suggested to limit the number of classes.

 Race selection

It is important to consider the ability to fight racially in PvP. The Undead have the ability to utilize Will of the Forsaken to overcome Fear. This can be extremely dangerous when they are grouped together. Other excellent racial skills are the Tauren Warstomp as well as Blood Elf, who have the ability chain with two seconds of silence. Race selection is also limited to classes, meaning that some options won't be available regardless of.

 Naming

It's real that the names you pick for your characters will make an enormous difference. You will react faster and be able to distinguish your characters more easily by choosing names that make sense. For instance, there are four Mages and one Priest. To figure out which one you're looking for, pick the multi-letter name you can suffix. The four initial characters mynameA. mynameB. mynameC, mynameD and mynameA. This helps to remember that they are the magicians. The name of the priest mynameX gives enough distinction to distinguish his name from others. Why is the final letter? In PvP, your opponent could say"/target A" and then get the first character whose name starts with the letter A! It is also possible to name them for their role in the party. Naming strategies will make it easier to recognize which character is which. If PvP is your primary objective, you might pick names that sound similar so that enemies who utilize voice communications (e.g. Ventrilo) cannot easily designate the target. You can alter the letter combinations (e.g. Aelliii, Aelleie, Aellie and Aellie could be used to switch letter combinations or to substitute vowels (e.g. Boylston, Boylstun, Boylsten) could cause a small delay in the character being focused-fired upon in an Arena. For your first team it is highly reccomended that you do not use any special characters in your names. It can make it difficult with macros and addon settings later on.

 Other concerns

 Layout of play area

This tiny detail can be a huge difference. I recommend that you arrange your characters in a sensible order and indicate which computer is running which character. The middle is the area where your "main" is and the secondaryaries are to either side. My preference is to put A in the lower left and B on the upper left. C is on the upper right. D on the lower left. Clockwise with X in the lower middle. The upper middle is to browse the web or searching for information, vent, etc. This is the layout I use. The X-Keys Desktop and Pro have eight keys wide, and five vertical. Making your physical interface as simple as it can be will speed the learning process and help you make more logical sense when playing.

 Getting started

If you choose the hardware method the hard part is the cost of it all. There will be four identical machines. Essentially, they are identical machines even down to the revision codes on the parts. While I build my own machines, it is possible to purchase them. This project, at the most basic hardware level, costs $4280 not counting taxes and shipping. If done correctly, it could bring in $5k, along with charges per month. It could seem like an amount depending on the way you look at it. It's not like anyone ever claimed that multiboxing at this level was affordable, however I can easily imagine more costly activities. Another alternative is to utilize a virtual machine with multi-core processors, which is significantly less expensive.

 Leveling

Powerleveling doesn't work in WoW, so leveling up is tricky even if you are already at level 80 and want to increase your character. It is best to get all your characters leveled at once. It is possible to do this by questing on your own, questing in groups and instances or even just instances. The experience is excellent, the mobs are simple and you get an amount of faction. Questing is a great choice. However, you will want to stay clear of every collecting quest because you'll have to complete the same five times. It's not enjoyable. I personally suggest instance grinding. Elites give great experience and at the point you are exhausted of the instance, you're done. There's a drawback to this: you'll spend a lot of time learning how to multibox, and studying the particulars of the. One option to solve the problem of learning about the instance is to download a dungeon map addon, so that you may get familiar with the dungeon that you are constantly operating.

 Macros

 Quest accepts

There are many quest-accepting macros. These macros are useful for accepting quests offered by "secondary" characters. Just right click and hit the quest accept macro to complete. Sharing quests is a different way to accomplish this, but not all quests are able to be shared.

 Pet macros

This macro will make your pet attack your current target if you have a target. The pet will attack the specific target it is focused on. For instance, if have multiple warlocks , and you give each one a pet, the pets will either attack the targets, or support the main one and strike your main's target.

What happens when my main is killed?

To enable you to change to another "main", you will have to configure your macros. This involves physically changing to a different mouse and changing your /assists/focus or /focus to another character. This can be accomplished using custom LUA scripts, or even a dedicated keyboard (or XKey). The rest is to me. The majority of priests die before I'm out of mana. I'm still at a loss. Often times it is faster to fight on battlegrounds since you can have almost full mana and health. However, there are times that you need to continue fighting and not simply stand there. It took me a bit to work this out and I'll let you figure it out.

 Fighting against the multi-boxer

It's much easier to defeat a multiboxer within an entire group. Find out who the main character is and then attack him. Once he/she is defeated then the rest of your group will become in danger. The player is able to switch to another persona.
