The massive new Animal Crossing: New Horizons update is now available, and it includes a slew of new features.  As a result, many of these elements aren't even brought to your attention when you first start the game, and you'll have to do some digging to discover them all.  As such, it is in keeping with the game's laid-back atmosphere.  However, if you are eager to see what's new (and understandably don't want to time skip), there are a few things you'll want to make a point of doing right away in order to get the clock started.  Here's a list of everything you should get done on day one.

Locate Brewster and get the cafe construction process started.

The Roost is a new coffee shop that Blathers hopes to open inside the museum, but in order to get the ball rolling, you must first locate Brewster, who will be in charge of the establishment.  The boat trip with Kapp'n, another newly added element from earlier in the series that can be found in our guide on where to find Brewster, is required to accomplish this.  You can read more about it in our guide on where to find Brewster.  The following day, after you have completed the preliminary steps, construction will begin, and the coffee shop will open the following day after that.  It's possible that this is the most important thing you should do after two full days of waiting.

Make a donation of 100,000buy ACNH furniture to help a shop get started.

You can open a shopping center on Harv's Island, but it will take several days to complete the task.  This is due to the fact that each individual shop requires a donation of 100,000ACNH 2.0 Items For Sale, and once that amount has been raised, no further donations can be accepted on that day.  While you're free to open the shops in any order you want, we recommend starting with Leif's so that you can begin purchasing the items necessary to plant new crops, which will in turn allow you to begin exploring the new cooking features that have been introduced.

Put an ordinance into effect.

You'll be able to enact an ordinance after having a conversation with Isabelle.  Each of these has a different effect, such as keeping stores open late (and villagers up late) or ensuring that everyone on the island does their part to make things prettier (which it seems like they should already be doing, but what are you going to do?). . Only one can be in effect at a time, and issuing one will not cause it to go into effect until the following day, so make your decision now so that you can begin enjoying the benefits immediately after you receive them.

Increase the amount of storage you have.

If you've managed to fill up the storage space in your home, this update will be a welcome development, as Tom Nook will allow you to increase the amount of storage space available to you once more.  From the previous limit of 2,400 items, you can now store a whopping 5,000 items in your account.  It will take a day to complete this improvement project.  In addition, if you haven't already purchased the previous upgrades, including the 2,400 slot one, you should do so right away because it's a prerequisite for being able to order the new storage shed from the Nook Stop in the near future.  It is available for purchase for 6,000 Nook Miles.

Items from Nook Miles can be ordered for next-day delivery.

Regardless of whether or not you intend to purchase the storage shed, it is worthwhile to pay a visit to the Nook Stop, as there are numerous new items available for purchase with Nook Miles there.  You can purchase a notebook containing new reactions, recipes for new types of fences, and a variety of items to use to decorate your island, among other things.  The physical items must be delivered by mail, which takes one day, so make sure to order the ones you want the most when you place your order.  Remember that you have a daily limit of five items that you can order from this site, so prioritize your wishlist and place your orders accordingly.

Place your gyroid fragments in the ground.

The gyroid fragment you should have received if you've already located Brewster (possibly in addition to any other gyroid fragments you may have discovered on the island where he was hanging out).  Gyroid fragments cannot be displayed on their own, but burying them on your island and watering them will result in a complete gyroid the following day.  These can be used to both decorate your home and annoy your friends all at the same time, if desired.  Don't forget to plant anything you can get your hands on to get the growing process underway.
