One important thing to remember when camping is to take all your necessary equipment with you. While camping involves trying to survive with little and roughing it out, this does not mean that camping doesn’t require any gear. A tent is one of those important items that you should not forget. Choosing the right tent for your camping experience is important. This is why most of the time, tall tents are better. Read below to see why you should choose a tall tent.

Why Choose a Tall Tent?

More Space, Especially If You Are Tall

One of the main benefits of tall tents is that you can actually have space to stand up in them. Especially if you are a tall person, you may have always felt like average size tents cramp your space or do not give you enough room to move around. Tall tents that you can stand up in are a great choice for you.

The additional headspace will provide enough room to set up a comfier camping bed, camping chairs, and I even hang clothes inside my Coleman Tenaya Lake cabin tent.

Extra Comfort

There is nothing more uncomfortable on a camping trip than having an uncomfortable small camping area. After your day of adventure, you will want to retire to a tent where you can get some sleep. But if your tent is not spacious enough, you will end up being uncomfortable. With a tall tent, you will have enough headroom and not have to crouch down every time you want to enter, exit, or move around the tent.

Safety

A tent that does not leave adequate space for sleeping or storage is prone to having more accidents, major and minor. However, this is mainly the case when family camping. Kids can be hyper and they can jump around in the tent. Using the pumped-up air mattress as a trampoline could be destructive, if one of the kids fall into the tent the whole thing could come down.

More space is critical for camping with kids, choose a tall and wide tent, it will almost feel like you are camping in a cabin! Also, when camping in the campground with larger groups using a tall camping tent that you can stand up in could make it a much better experience!

When you do not have enough space to keep your equipment or you have to cram all in a corner, you are bound to damage your tent. Any sharp edges may tear through the tent allowing both pests and dirt into the tent.

The Cons of Having a Tall Tent?

Colder Space

While tents tall enough are a great option, they can sometimes get colder inside. If you live in a place that has cool nights and mornings choosing a tall tent might not be your best bet. The larger the space inside, the harder to keep warm. However, this can easily be prevented with proper sleeping bags and other sleeping equipment.

If you are to use a large camping tent I highly recommend using a real foam mattress or a sleeping pad. Air mattresses work and I have used them in cooler weather but you will be colder during the cold nights. I live in Canada and I have had a few chilly nights, but I still made it through. Always take warm blankets and a good sleeping bag!

Difficult to Set-Up

Due to their height, tall tents can be a little difficult to setup. This might require the help of someone else or you might need to use a footstool. Especially if you are fitting a rainfly, this would require you some extra height. So you will not be able to be as quick as you are when setting up other tents and will have to spend extra time on these.

However, certain tall tents you can stand in are rated for quick set up times which is very nice. If you don’t enjoy the time setting up a tent choose a quick setup tent, I will mark which tents are quicker to set up in our list below.

When To Choose a Tall Tent?

You might be going camping with little experience and finding the right tent isn’t easy. If you want a tall camping tent you can stand up in you are probably interested in some sort of car camping. If not, I am letting you know this is not the tent for backpack camping.

Backpack camping requires a hike to the camp destination, and a tall large tent weighs a lot making it almost impossible to use. The Kelty Salida is a great starter backpacking tent, easy to use and very affordable.
